Biography

Kenneth Stetson was born 14 January 1946 in Chadron Nebraska to Eleanora L. Stetson-Hendrickson (1921 - 2005) and Lester Stetson (1912 - 1973). His family farmed and ranched in the Chadron and Crawford Nebraska area until 1959 when the family moved to the Longmont Colorado area. He had three brothers, Everett, Larry and Keith and a sister, Lois. It was in High School that Kenny and Janet Irene Yeager met during their sophomore year of high school. They were married June 25, 1965 in Longmont, Colorado; there were no children before his death. He enjoyed and was good at football and wrestling. Kenny enlisted in the Marine Corps Delayed Entry Program (DEP) to enter the service. He did not wish to be drafted into the Army so he signed up for the program in Denver, Colorado on December 15, 1966, entering on active duty shortly thereafter. He finished boot camp and went to Vietnam, arriving June 26, 1967. He was assigned to E Battery of the 11th Marines as part of the Forward Observer Team for Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. He was wounded in October 1967 and after recovering in the hospital was sent back into the field. He died in South Vietnam on February 17, 1968 from hostile gun fire. He received the following medals: Purple Heart; National Defense; Viet Nam Service; Viet Nam Campaign and he is honored on Panel 39E, Row 77 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Ken was an amazing man, wise beyond his years, even in high school. He was a caring man and always stood up for those less fortunate, or in need of protection. I received a letter months after his death from his commanding officer in which he told me how Ken would stand watch for others when he himself was also tired, but he put himself aside to make life easier for someone else. He continues to be missed by his family and friends.
