Commonly called Fred. Nicknamed the "Big Swede". Described by the Salt Lake Tribune as very tall and muscular. Son of Union Civil War veteran Hilton S. and Jane A. Springstead. Brother of Esther, William, and Warren and half-brother of Julia, Florence and Herbert Springstead. Worked as driver of one of Douglass' transfer teams. Enlisted at Greeley with Greeley troops. Member Company D (also reported as Company K), 1st Colorado Volunteers. Married in San Francisco shortly before leaving for Philippines. Served as cook before entering combat action. Killed when shot in head by Mauser round. Originally buried at Fort San Antonio with remains later transferred to United States.
