Biography

Second Lt. Dell Shasteen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Murl Shasteen, Colorado Springs, was killed in action December 17, five weeks after being shipped overseas from Ft. Meade, Md. He was sent across as a replacement officer, and killed in Luxembourg the day after the Nazi counter attack began in his sector. Dell was just 12 weeks short of graduation at Colorado State College, Fort Collins, when he entered the Army in April of 1942. He graduated from Colorado Springs High School and trained in the ROTC at Fort Collins. Dell began his training with a commission at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and completed training at the Fort Benning, Georgia, Infantry School. He left this country November 11 and traveled through England, Scotland, France, and Belgium before going into action. He wrote two letters home after going across but never received letters written by his parents after he shipped. Dell’s brother, Staff Sgt. Gerald Shasteen, had completed his missions as a tail gunner with the 15th Air Force in Italy, and was in a rest camp in Santa Monica, California at the time of Dell’s death. His sister, Jeanne Lou, was attending Colorado State College.
