Brother of Dezell and Richard Ostrander of Navy and Harold Ostrander of Army. Served aboard USS Denver as of 1914 and was Chief Quartermaster aboard USS Huntington in World War I. Also Deputy Sheriff of Garfield County who guarded Shoshone power plant. Considered a first class athlete, Ostrander was an accomplished motorcyclist and racer. While at Portsmouth station at New Hampshire organized All Navy basketball team that won 42 of 44 games and championship. Was coxswain aboard USS Denver which was best racing boat of the station. Served aboard USS Monitor Menadnoe as gun-pointer of the 13-inch guns and made world's record in hits made and time fired while off the coast of Chefoo, China. Traveled 25,000 miles during World War I aboard the Huntington which was a troop transport. As of 1920 Ostrander had circled the world 7 times.
