Biography

Son of Warren H. and Edith Monfort. Brother of Marjorie and Kenneth Monfort. Married to Viola Swanson in April 1943. Uncle of Colorado Rockies owners Charlie Monfort and Dick Monfort, who is named after him. Attended Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Raised Grand Champion Steer of 1940 Colorado State Fair. Enlisted June 10, 1942. Trained at Ellington Field in Texas. Received commission as 2nd Lieutenant at Hondo Field in Texas, and trained as Flying Fortress navigator at Kearney, Nebraska. In 1943 joined 615th Squadron, 401st Bomber Group, based in Deenethorpe, England. While on third mission as part of massive 800-bomber daylight raid on Frankfurt plane he was navigating, after dropping bombs, was attacked by enemy fighters and hit by 2 rockets of Messerschmitt 110 German fighters, bailed out and was killed. Awarded Purple Heart and Air Medal.
