Biography

Hugh Hudson Melrose was born at Mancos, Montezuma County, Colorado on 15 March 1907. Parents are: Joseph Matthew & Ella Perl (Kinzer) Melrose. Part of his early life was lived at Buckeye, Arizona. They came back to live near Arboles, Colorado in 1914. He attended the rural Stollseimer Creek school in Archuleta County, Colorado. He enlisted in the Army at Ft. Lupton, Colorado on 25 March 1942. He was assigned to the 90th Division's 357th Infantry Regiment, Co. G. at Camp Barkeley near Abilene,Texas. He trained in Louisanna for swamp maneuvers and in California for desert maneuvers during 1942-1943. He married Ruth Anna Wymer-Lebarre at Abilene, Texas on 25 Dec 1942. Twin babies, Wendell & Patricia were born to them in Sept of 1943. Hugh shipped overseas in March of 1944 from Ft. Dix, N.J. to England. The 90th's 357th Inf. landed on Utah beach in Normandy on D+2, June 8, 1944. Hugh was K.I.A. near Gourblesville inside Normandy on 12 June 1944. He is buried in Hilltop cemetery at Pagosa Springs, Colorado. His widow, Ruth Wymer Melrose never remarried. Ruth died in 1990 and is buried with him.
