Biography

Nicknamed "BON". Son of John and Sarah Jane Gallagher Chatwin Hiles. Grew up in Nebraska and Colorado. Married to Esther Lynn and father of Harriet Hiles; later married to Mary "Molly" Hall and father of Eugene, Henry and George Hiles. Drafted April 26, 1918 and trained at Fort Lupton. Severely wounded shortly before armistice that left him unable to lie down due to a number of high explosive shell wounds in his back which led to infections. Despite his wounds maintained cheerful disposition and became friends with Chaplain John A. Nesbitt as Base Hospital 53, after earlier staying at Base Hospital 88. Although wounds improved Hiles ultimately died of strep and pneumonia. Temporarily buried at US Army Cemetery No. 516 near Langres, France before transfer to Crown Hill.
