Biography

Second son of Mr. and Mrs. David H. Helps and grandson of James Helps of Golden Gate Canyon. Born and raised in Golden and educated in Golden schools including Golden High School. Worked at Coors Porcelain plant and entered service on April 20, 1943. Received training at Kearns Field, Utah; Lowry Field, Denver; Fort Meyer, Florida; and Avon Park, Florida. Send overseas in March 1944 and served as tail gunner on B-17 Flying Fortress "Silver Slipper". Shot down while flying air support of invasion of Normandy. Brother of William and Army Air Corps serviceman Orville Lee Helps.

He's of special interest to us here in Golden; his grandfather's log cabin is the larger cabin of Clear Creek History Park that he would've known as a child; his parents' home and where he grew up is part of the East Street Historic District.
