Sgt. Sean M. Durkin, 24, of Aurora, Colo. died April 9, 2010 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device near Forward Operating Base Wilson, Afghanistan, on March 27. He was transferred to the hospital following the March 27 bomb attack on his vehicle. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, Fort Carson, Colo.
A funeral service for Sgt. Sean M. Durkin was held in Phillipsburg Alliance Church, 255 Lincoln St., Phillipsburg, NJ, followed by a funeral procession to nearby Hay's Cemetery, Easton, PA, where Durkin grew up.
The Easton Police Department closed Larry Holmes Drive between the Northampton Street "Free" Bridge and S. Third Street to prepare for the procession. Citizens paying their respects lined up at Larry Holmes Drive along with fire, police and emergency medical services personnel.
He and his family moved to Aurora Colorado in 2003, and he graduated from Aurora's Eaglecrest High School.
He received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart while serving in the Army during Operation Enduring Freedom.
He was preceded in death by his father, William J. Durkin Jr., a brother, Justin, paternal grandfather, William J. Durkin Sr., and maternal grandmother, Dorothy Dorward.
Sgt. Durkin was personally presented his Purple Heart by President Obama on March 28, 2010 at a hospital in Kabul.
