Biography

Carl immigrated from Hungary on June 28, 1921 through Ellis Island with his father, mother and older brother Frank Burkhardt(my dad). He was in the Black Cat Squadron which is the VP-12 Squadron. On 8Mar1944 he was on an Anti-submarine patrol, in the Solomon Islands. The airplane was on a search mission at night, had sighted and attacked an enemy submarine and was trailing a resulting oil slick. At some time subsequent to the last report received from the plane at 2350, it crashed into the side of a mountain on the west coast of Choiseul Island. No examination of the wreckage by members of the Trouble Board has been possible. Report from natives indicated the plane partially burned. All personnel were killed.
