Yoeman Apgar  was born in Raton, New Mexico.  His family move to La Junta, Colorado where he joined the Navy right out of high school.

He was killed in action along with eight other crew while serving on the USS Chester (CA-27) during the battle of Tarora in the Marshall Islands on 1 February 1942.  A Japenese bomb struck the well deck.

His body was not returned to the United States until October of 1947.
