He was assigned to the 501st BS of the USAAF on May 17, 1944. Transferred to 345th BG and 499th BS. He was part of a six plane strike against Lolobata Village on Wasile Bay, in Halmahera, Philippines. His plane crashed just off of the eastern shore of the bay and the Kai Tiga River. The remaining B-25s circled for 90 minutes waiting for a PBY to arrive. At least 3 crewmen survived the crash but none were ever seen again. He was presumed to have been captured and killed by the Japanese. One man was buried on the beach. Carl was reported to be MIA on Aug. 13, 1944.
