Lt. Simms received his preliminary flight instruction at Oakland Naval Reserve base and was commissioned at Corpus Christi, Texas February 26, 1943. Shortly afterwards he was married. Lt. Simms was born in Denver and attended St Dominic's grade school and North High School. He then attended Regis College before enlisting in June 1942. He received specialized training in flying Navy fighter planes.
