Biography

John Onderdonk Roesler was serving his country during the Vietnam War when he gave his all in the line of duty. He had enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Entered the service via Reserve Military.  His military occupation or specialty was Infantry Officer. Service number assignment was O-82391.

 

John was born on February 8, 1939 New York, NY. John and Susan Whitlock were married 10 June 1961 on the same day that he received his officer commission.  After serving in the Marines, John and Susan moved to Denver in 1965 and later to Boulder, CO.  According to our records Colorado was his home or enlistment state and Denver county has been included within the archival record. We have Denver listed as his city.  His parents were Anne and Edward Roesler.

 

John re-entered the US Marines and after completing his training he was sent to Vietnam and arrived there 1 January 1967 and was promoted to Captain and assigned as the platoon commander with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.

 

During his service in the Vietnam War, Marine Corps Captain Roesler experienced a traumatic event which ultimately resulted in loss of life on January 24, 1968. Recorded circumstances attributed to: Hostile Died of Wounds, Other Explosive Device, Ground Casualty. Incident location: South Vietnam, Quang Nam province.

 

Captain Roesler died when he stepped on a hostile booby-trap mine while on a combat patrol, 3 kilometers southeast of the Tuy Loan Bridge, near Hill 55.  He was survived by his wife; Susan "Suzy" Roesler (1942 - 1999) and his daughter; Collin Roesler of Boulder, CO. John was cremated, ashes scattered. Specifically: Per his daughter, he chose to be cremated and his ashes were spread in Vermont at the family home.
