Son of Jennie Pierce of Las Animas. Crewman aboard U.S.S. Jacob Jones. Was among 66 men lost when German submarine U-53 attacked and sank the ship while en route from Brest, France to Queenstown, Ireland, the first American destroyer sunk in combat. Pierce's remains were never recovered.
