At the age of 12, Dimitri came to this country from the Ural steppes in Russia and his family settled in Colorado. He left high school at the age of 17, and joined the Army where he felt where he belonged. Dimitri was a shy kid but the Army gave him a sense of belonging to a group – he was very proud of what he was doing. He loved the M-1 tank and excelled as a gunner aboard the 60-ton machine. He was on his second tour of duty in Iraq when he died.
Dimitri loved his friends, loved life, loved this country and was totally committed to doing his best. Even though he was proud of his Russian heritage, America was the only place he wanted to be. He had a fascination with all things mechanical and was especially intent on fixing up an old Nissan sports car he was rebuilding at his family's Aurora, Colorado home. He was not yet a citizen when he died and his family hoped he would be granted citizenship posthumously. Sgt Dimitri Muscat was granted citizenship and promoted to sergeant after his death.
SGT Muscat died on February 24, 2006.
