Colorado Freedom Memorial to Host 9/11 20th Anniversary Ceremony, Participating in National 9/11 Freedom Flag Raising “Call to Action” on Patriot Day 2021

Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021 — 10-11 a.m.

Nationwide Call to Action to strengthen 9/11 education and remembrance.

September 8, 2021 – Aurora, Colorado – The Colorado Freedom Memorial (CFM) is pleased to participate in the National Freedom Flag Raising Call to Action on Patriot Day, Sept. 11, 2021, marking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our nation.

At 10 a.m. the CFM will pay tribute to the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with the reading of the 116 names of Coloradans who “gave all” in Iraq and Afghanistan. As each name is read, a rose will be placed in their honor at the Colorado Freedom Memorial and Gold Star Families Memorial Monument by cadets of the Colorado Civil Air Patrol. Remarks will be made by Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman and Colorado Congressman Jason Crow.

During the day’s remembrance ceremony, the CFM will also raise the Freedom Flag as Colorado’s exclusive partner for the National 9/11 Freedom Flag Raising Call to Action.

The Honor Bell Foundation will be onsite with the Honor Bell, and will toll it in tribute to those killed on 9/11 and to the 116 Coloradans lost. Additionally, the CFM will display a small piece of steel from World Trade Center Tower One to help educate young people about the 2977 lives lost that day.

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for seating.

As a participant in this Call to Action, the CFM will receive a 9/11 Freedom Flag from the Freedom Flag Foundation to be flown annually on Patriot Day below the U.S. flag through the month of September. The Freedom Flag was created as a simple sketch on a napkin that ultimately became Virginia’s Official Flag of Remembrance for 9/11 (VAC §1-510). Today, the Freedom Flag is our nation’s only codified 9/11 flag of remembrance, and it has been flown or displayed in over 1,000 schools and in nearly every state in the US.

This Call to Action is sponsored by the Freedom Flag Foundation (Richmond, VA), which is establishing partnerships in all 50 states to educate the next generation about 9/11 using the Freedom Flag, World Trade Center (WTC) Steel artifacts from the 92-95th floors of Tower 1, and the story of the Freedom Flag in book form: Unfurling the Freedom Flag – A 9/11 Story. The mission of the Freedom Flag Foundation is to establish the Freedom Flag as a National Symbol of Remembrance for the events of September 11, 2001.
